Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between HTML and Markdown?

HTML uses tags like <h1> and <strong> to mark up a page for browsers. Markdown is a lighter plain-text format that uses symbols such as # for headings and ** for bold, so it is easier to read and edit by hand. Many docs sites, READMEs and note apps use it.

What is the difference between ATX and Setext headings?

ATX headings start with hash marks, like # Title or ## Section, and work for all six heading levels. Setext headings underline the text with = or - characters, but only cover levels one and two. ATX is the more common choice today.

Is my HTML sent to a server?

No. The conversion runs in your browser using the Turndown library, so your HTML is not uploaded to be converted. We only log basic usage details, such as input length and the options you chose, not the content itself.

Is this HTML to Markdown converter free?

Yes. It is free, needs no account and has no usage cap, since all the work happens on your own device. Paste in a single snippet or a whole page and convert it as often as you need.
