Frequently asked questions

What are UTM parameters?

UTM parameters are tags added to the end of a link, such as ?utm_source=newsletter, that tell analytics tools like Google Analytics where a visitor came from. They do not change the page, they just label the visit so you can compare campaigns.

Which UTM fields are required?

Always fill in source, medium and campaign, because Google Analytics uses them to group your traffic. Term is mainly for paid search keywords, and content separates links within one campaign, such as two buttons in the same email.

Should UTM values be lowercase?

Pick one style and stick to it. Analytics tools treat Email and email as different values, so mixed casing splits your reports. Lowercase words joined with underscores or hyphens, like spring_sale, keep things tidy.

Should I use UTM links on my own site?

No. Tagging links between your own pages can overwrite where the visitor really came from, which muddies your reports. Save UTM links for places that point to your site from outside, such as emails, ads and social posts.

Does this shorten or track my link?

No. The link is built in your browser and goes straight to your page with no redirect in between, so clicks show up in your own analytics rather than in OpenTools.
