Frequently asked questions

What is a URL slug?

A slug is the readable part of a URL that identifies a page, like how-to-bake-bread in example.com/blog/how-to-bake-bread. Short, descriptive slugs help visitors and search engines understand what a page is about before they click.

How does it handle punctuation?

It lowercases the text, turns every character that is not a letter, number or underscore into a separator, and joins the words with single hyphens. Apostrophes count as separators too, so "didn't" becomes didn-t; drop the apostrophe first if you want didnt.

Does it handle accented letters?

No. Only plain A to Z letters, digits and underscores are kept, so accented letters are treated as separators and split the word. Type the plain letter instead, for example cafe rather than the accented spelling, to keep each word whole.

Is my text sent to a server?

The slug is built in your browser as you type, with no server step involved in creating it. The site's usage analytics do record the title you enter and the slug it produces.
