Frequently asked questions

What is a MIME type?

A MIME type, also called a media type, is a label like image/png or application/json that tells browsers and servers what kind of data a file holds. Servers send it in the Content-Type header so the browser knows whether to show, play or download the file.

What is the difference between a MIME type and Content-Type?

The MIME type is just the media type, such as text/html. The Content-Type value is what goes in the HTTP header and can add parameters, most often a charset, as in text/html; charset=utf-8. This tool shows both so you can copy whichever you need.

Why does .ts show video/mp2t instead of TypeScript?

The .ts extension is registered for MPEG transport stream video, so standard MIME databases return video/mp2t. TypeScript has no registered media type of its own, so set one yourself if your server needs to send TypeScript source files.

Does it read or upload my file?

No. The tool only looks at the extension in the text you type and never opens a file. Lookups run in your browser using the widely used mime-types library and its database of known extensions.
