Frequently asked questions

What is EXIF data?

EXIF is information a camera or phone writes into a photo when it is taken, such as the device model, lens, shutter speed, ISO, date and time, and often GPS coordinates. IPTC and XMP are related standards that hold captions, keywords, copyright notices and editing history.

Is my file uploaded to a server?

No. The file is read right in your browser with an open-source metadata library, so its contents and metadata never leave your device. We only log basic usage details, such as the file name, type and size, to see how the tool is used.

Which file types are supported?

The reader handles JPEG, PNG, TIFF, HEIC, AVIF, WebP and GIF images, which covers photos from most cameras and phones. Video, audio and PDF files are not supported, so they show an error instead of results.

Why does my photo show no location or camera data?

Many apps and social sites strip metadata when you share or upload a photo, and some phones have location tagging turned off. Screenshots and edited exports often carry little or no EXIF data either, so try the original file straight from the camera or phone.
