Frequently asked questions

What is a Unix timestamp?

A Unix timestamp, or epoch time, is the number of seconds since 00:00:00 UTC on January 1, 1970. It is the same everywhere in the world, which makes it a simple way for computers to store and compare moments. JavaScript and many APIs count in milliseconds instead.

How do I tell seconds from milliseconds?

For present-day dates, a 10-digit timestamp is in seconds and a 13-digit one is in milliseconds. The converter checks what you paste and adjusts automatically, and treats 16-digit values as microseconds. Dates you convert always come back in milliseconds; divide by 1000 for seconds.

Which time zone does it use?

Dates you pick or type are read in your device's time zone unless the text includes an offset such as Z or +05:00. Timestamps are shown in your local time plus UTC in ISO 8601 format, so you can compare both at a glance.

Does the conversion happen on a server?

No. Conversions run in your browser using its built-in date functions and your device clock. Usage analytics record the dates and timestamps you enter, but no server is involved in working out the result.
