Frequently asked questions

How does image compression work?

Lossy formats like JPEG, WebP and AVIF drop fine detail the eye barely notices, and the quality setting controls how much is dropped. Lower quality means smaller files but more visible blur and blockiness. Resizing to the size your page actually displays often saves more than compression alone.

Which output format should I choose?

WebP is a safe default for websites, with small files and support in every modern browser. AVIF is often smaller still but slower to encode. Use JPEG for the widest compatibility and PNG when you need sharp edges or transparency.

How much smaller will my image get?

It depends on the image and your settings. Photos straight from a camera or saved at high quality usually shrink a lot, while images that are already compressed may barely change. The result screen shows the original size, the new size and how much you saved.

Are my images uploaded?

Yes. Your image is sent to OpenTools' server, compressed there and sent straight back as a download. The tool does not save a copy, and you do not need an account to use it.

Is there a file size limit?

Yes, each image can be up to 20 MB, and the tool handles one image at a time. Supported uploads are JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF and BMP, and animated GIFs come out as a single still frame.
