Frequently asked questions

Are my photos uploaded to a server?

No. The watermark is drawn onto each photo on a canvas in your browser, and the ZIP file is built on your device too. Your photos are never uploaded, so it suits client shoots and unreleased work.

What is a watermark, and does it stop people copying photos?

A watermark is a semi-transparent logo or name laid over an image to show who owns it. It will not stop a determined copier, but a visible mark, especially one tiled across the photo, makes reuse less tempting and keeps your name attached when the image gets shared.

Can I add a text watermark?

The tool uses an image as the watermark, so save your name or copyright line as a PNG with a transparent background first. A transparent PNG looks cleanest, since only the lettering or logo shows on top of your photo.

How big will the watermark be?

Each watermark is drawn at 20 percent of its own pixel size, whatever the size of the photo. If it comes out too big or too small on your images, resize the watermark file before uploading it.

What format are the finished photos?

Each photo is saved as a JPEG at 92 percent quality inside watermarked-images.zip, with "watermarked-" added to the front of the original file name. Transparent areas in PNG photos turn black, so flatten those first.
