Frequently asked questions

What does a code beautifier do?

A code beautifier, or formatter, rewrites code with consistent indentation, line breaks, spacing and quote style without changing what it does. Clean formatting makes code easier to read, review and compare. This tool uses Prettier, the formatter many teams already run in their editors.

Which languages can it format?

You can choose JSON, HTML, XML, JavaScript, TypeScript, CSS, Markdown or YAML, or let Auto Detect guess from the content. JSX works with the JavaScript option and TSX with TypeScript. XML runs through the HTML formatter, so complex XML documents may not come out perfectly.

Why do I get a formatting error?

Prettier can only format code that parses. If the chosen parser fails, the tool retries as JavaScript, and if that also fails it shows an error. For JSON it shows the parser message instead, which usually points to the spot that needs fixing.

Is my code uploaded to a server?

No. Formatting runs in your browser with Prettier, and files you upload are read locally, so your code is not sent to a server to be formatted. Usage analytics note details such as code length and the options you pick.
