Frequently asked questions

How is password strength measured?

Strength comes down to how many guesses an attacker would need. Length matters most, followed by mixing character types and avoiding dictionary words, names, dates, keyboard patterns and passwords seen in past breaches, since a common pattern can fall quickly even when it looks complex.

Why does the intended use matter?

A newsletter login and a bank account carry very different risks. Telling the tester what the password is for lets it hold high-value accounts like banking and email to a higher standard and suggest changes that fit.

Is it safe to enter my real password?

We recommend against it. Your password is sent to OpenTools' server and passed to an AI model for analysis, so it does not stay in your browser. Test a password built the same way instead, with the same length and character mix, then apply the advice to your real one.

Can it check if my password was in a data breach?

No. It does not look your password up in breach databases. It reviews length, character variety, common patterns and any rules you supply, then gives a rating from weak to very strong with suggestions.
