Frequently asked questions

What makes a password strong?

Length and randomness. Each extra character multiplies the number of guesses an attacker needs, so a random 16-character password is far stronger than a clever 8-character one. Use a different password for every account and keep them in a password manager.

How long should my password be?

Aim for at least 12 to 16 random characters for everyday accounts, and longer for email, banking and your password manager master password. If a site limits length, use the longest it allows.

Are generated passwords sent or stored anywhere?

No. Passwords are generated in your browser with its cryptographically secure random number generator (crypto.getRandomValues), and they are never sent to OpenTools or saved. Usage stats record settings such as the length you chose, never the password itself.

What are similar and ambiguous characters?

Similar characters are easy to confuse when reading, like i, l, 1 and 0. Ambiguous characters are symbols such as brackets, slashes, quotes and colons that can be hard to type or rejected by some systems. Excluding them helps when a password must be read or typed by hand.
