Frequently asked questions

What is a DNS record?

A DNS record is an entry in a domain's zone that tells the internet where to send traffic. A and AAAA records point to IPv4 and IPv6 addresses, CNAME creates an alias, MX lists mail servers, NS names the nameservers and TXT holds text such as SPF rules.

What does TTL mean in DNS?

TTL, or time to live, is how many seconds resolvers may cache a record before asking again. A TTL of 3600 means a change can take up to an hour to reach anyone who cached the old value, which is why people lower TTLs before a migration.

Is the lookup done in my browser?

No. Browsers cannot query DNS records directly, so the domain you enter is sent to an OpenTools server, which runs the lookup and returns the records to the page. Only the domain name is sent.
